New left lane driving law goes into effect

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIDK/KIFI) 300 new laws go into effect in Idaho and one of them is the left lane driving law. The new law went into effect Sunday and will allow police to ticket anyone traveling too slow in the left lane, causing a traffic jam.

This is most often occurring when a semi tries to pass another semi, but the law applies to all drivers.

Idaho State Police Sergeant David Noyes believes this law will be difficult to enforce. “Well on highways we all know there’s different vehicles that go different speeds.” Noyes said.

“We can’t tell normally as a police officer, when we are called after a traffic complaint, to know if that semi was intentionally impeding traffic by driving side by side with the other one or if it was truly trying to pass the other semi, and it was just a slower than normal rate that he was passing.”

Drivers are usually instructed to use the left lane for passing only, but often ignore that part of the law.
