Not only is it annoying, driving on the left is unsafe
Writer Joseph Stromberg and Vox took on a cause that’s near and dear to our hearts last week: left-lane hogging. We know our readers know this, but if you need any extra ammunition to explain to friends and family why it’s not OK to cruise in the left lane, show them the video above.
Basically it explains there are two types of drivers: “those who get worked up about people driving slowly in the left lane, and those who do it all the time and have no idea they’re upsetting everyone else.”
Every state has some sort of law against camping in the left lane, but it’s rarely enforced. Those laws range from “always get over unless passing” to “get over if moving more slowly than traffic,” “get over if traveling slower than the speed limit” or “get over to let faster traffic pass.”
Research is now showing that, as opposed to raw speed, variance from the average speed is what causes most accidents. Also, the number of accidents goes up with the the number of lane changes. Both of those increase when a slower driver is cruising in the left lane.
So take this post, share it everywhere, shout it from the mountaintops and call your congressman. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll help end this scourge of modern humanity.
